The Governor of Taraba State has officially defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in a historic political event held at the Jolly Nyame Stadium, Jalingo, drawing top national leaders of the ruling party and a massive crowd of supporters.
The defection ceremony was attended by the Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, who represented President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as well as the National Chairman of the APC and members of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party.
Speaking to journalists during the event, the APC Deputy National Women Leader, Hajiya Zainab Abubakar Ibrahim, expressed deep gratitude to Almighty God for making the day a reality, describing the governor’s decision as a major milestone for Taraba State and the APC at the national level.
“I thank Almighty God for making today possible for Taraba State and for the governor to officially join the APC at the national level,” she said.
Hajiya Zainab Abubakar Ibrahim noted that the APC remains the party in control at the centre, stressing that aligning Taraba State with the ruling party is a strategic move aimed at accelerating development and ensuring the state benefits fully from federal government programmes and interventions.
“The APC is the national government, and it is good for Taraba State to align with the centre so that the state can benefit from the national government, just as other APC-governed states are currently benefiting,” she added.
She further explained that the governor’s decision was carefully considered and taken in the best interest of the people of Taraba State, emphasizing that the move would open more opportunities for infrastructure development, empowerment programmes, and economic growth.
The Vice President, who represented the President at the event, welcomed the governor into the APC family, assuring the people of Taraba State of the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting the state’s development agenda. The APC National Chairman and members of the NWC also described the defection as a major boost to the party’s strength in the North-East region.
The event attracted thousands of party supporters, political stakeholders, traditional rulers, and government officials from across the country, marking a significant shift in the political landscape of Taraba State.
Political analysts believe the defection will further strengthen the APC ahead of future elections and position Taraba State for closer collaboration with the Federal Government.
