El-Rufai Backs Defence Minister’s Warning to Terrorist Sympathizers

Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has expressed support for the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (rtd), following the minister’s recent warning to Nigerians who sympathize with or shield bandits and terrorists.

General Musa, in an interview with BBC Hausa, cautioned Nigerians against sympathizing with individuals involved in banditry and terrorism, stressing that those who kidnap and kill innocent citizens do not deserve any form of support. He further warned that anyone found aiding or shielding such criminals, even under the guise of family ties, would be treated as a bandit or terrorist if they fail to desist.

Reacting to a video clip of the interview shared by BBC Hausa, El-Rufai commended the defence minister’s stance. Taking to his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle, the former governor described General Musa as “a breath of fresh air” and offered prayers for his success in tackling insecurity across the country.

“God bless Minister Chris Musa for being a breath of fresh air. May Almighty God help him in his honest quest for real security. This interview should be rebroadcast with English language translation as a matter of urgency,” El-Rufai wrote.
El-Rufai’s comments come against the backdrop of his earlier criticisms of some state governors, whom he accused of negotiating with bandits and paying ransoms to secure peace.

Meanwhile, the debate over the handling of banditry and kidnapping continues to generate controversy. Prominent Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has been one of the leading voices calling for a blanket amnesty for bandits, particularly in northern Nigeria. Gumi has argued that many individuals involved in banditry were driven into crime by poverty, lack of employment opportunities, inadequate empowerment, and the absence of basic social amenities.

According to the cleric, addressing these underlying socio-economic challenges is key to ending banditry and kidnapping in the country.

The contrasting positions highlight ongoing divisions over the most effective approach to tackling Nigeria’s worsening security challenges, as the federal government intensifies efforts to curb violence and restore peace nationwide.
