The Coordinator, Office of the First Lady of Edo State, Mrs. Edesili Okpebholo Anani, has once again demonstrated exemplary compassion and responsive leadership following her timely intervention that saved the life of a pregnant woman and her unborn child at the Central Hospital, Benin City.
The life-saving incident occurred during Mrs. Anani’s visit to the hospital as part of activities to celebrate Christmas babies. While carrying out the scheduled engagement, she encountered a critically ill expectant mother who had just been rushed into the facility at eight months’ gestation due to profuse bleeding. The woman, who had no prior appointment in line with hospital protocol, was in visible distress and urgently required immediate medical attention.
The patient was later identified as Mrs. Rahila John, an indigene of Adamawa State. Upon learning of the severity of the situation, Mrs. Anani was deeply moved and promptly directed the hospital management to set aside all administrative formalities and treat the situation as a medical emergency, emphasizing the urgent need to save both the mother and her unborn child.
Medical evaluation revealed that Mrs. John was suffering from Placenta Previa Type III and Abruptio Placentae at approximately 32 weeks of gestation—both life-threatening obstetric conditions that pose grave risks to maternal and fetal survival if not urgently managed.
Acting swiftly on Mrs. Anani’s directive, the hospital’s medical team was immediately mobilized, and an emergency caesarean section was successfully carried out. The prompt response and coordinated effort of the healthcare professionals proved critical.
The intervention resulted in the safe delivery of a healthy baby boy weighing 1.8 kilograms, who was immediately placed under specialized care in an incubator at the Neonatal Ward. The mother is currently recovering steadily at the Maternity Surgical Ward. Both mother and child are reported to be in stable condition and are receiving continuous medical monitoring and care.
This intervention has been widely commended as a clear demonstration of Mrs. Anani’s unwavering commitment to the health and welfare of women and children across Edo State. Her decisive action—taken outside the scope of her official visit—averted a potential tragedy and reinforced the importance of empathy, prompt decision-making, and people-centered leadership in public service.
Indeed, the survival of Mrs. Rahila John and her newborn stands as a powerful testament to the impact of compassionate leadership and responsive governance, particularly in moments of critical need. The Office of the First Lady continues to play a vital role in advocating for maternal and child health, ensuring that no life is lost due to avoidable delays or procedural barriers.
