ABUJA-2026

On Thursday, 15 January 2026, Nigerians from all walks of life gathered at Eagle Square, Abuja, to commemorate the Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day (AFCRD) 2026.
The solemn national ceremony brought together the nation’s leadership, members of the Armed Forces, and citizens in a shared moment of reflection, gratitude, and reverence for the gallant officers and men who made the supreme sacrifice in the defence of Nigeria’s peace, unity, and territorial integrity.
The ceremony was held under the authority of the President and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR. Representing the President at the event, the Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency Senator Kashim Shettima, GCON, laid a wreath on behalf of the nation. This symbolic act underscored the collective appreciation of the Nigerian people and the enduring respect accorded to the fallen heroes whose courage, selflessness, and patriotism remain a cornerstone of national pride.
In a powerful demonstration of unity, solidarity, and shared responsibility for national security, the Service Chiefs and heads of security agencies also participated in the wreath laying ceremony. Among them were the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede; the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu; the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas (Admiralty Medal); the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke; and the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun. Their participation reaffirmed the Armed Forces’ unwavering commitment to honouring the legacy of fallen comrades and sustaining the values of duty, discipline, and sacrifice upon which the nation’s defence is built.
The event attracted a distinguished gathering of national leaders and stakeholders, reflecting the importance of the occasion in Nigeria’s civic and historical calendar. Present at the ceremony were the President of the Senate, Distinguished Senator Godswill Akpabio; the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Honourable Justice Kudirat Motonmori Olatokunbo Kekere Ekun; and the Honourable Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd), OFR, alongside other members of the Federal Executive Council. Also in attendance were heads of security and intelligence agencies, members of the diplomatic corps, senior military officers both serving and retired, members of the Nigerian Legion, veterans, widows of fallen heroes, and other eminent guests.
The Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day 2026 served as a solemn reminder of the heavy price paid for the nation’s freedom and stability. It also provided an opportunity for Nigerians to renew their collective resolve to support the Armed Forces and security agencies in their constitutional mandate. United in remembrance, the nation paid heartfelt tribute to the brave men and women whose sacrifices continue to shape Nigeria’s collective memory, inspire future generations, and strengthen the national commitment to peace, unity, and sustainable progress.
