After casting his vote on 13 December 2025, the Senator representing Borno State, Senator Kaka Shehu Lawan, spoke to journalists on the conduct of the Local Government Area (LGA) elections in the state.
He began by expressing gratitude to God Almighty for sparing lives to witness what he described as a historic moment in the political journey of Borno State.
“First and foremost, I want to use this medium to thank God Almighty for sparing our lives to witness this important occasion. Today is a very important day in the political history of Borno State.”
Senator Lawan recalled that since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999, Borno State had faced serious security challenges, which at some point made it impossible to conduct local government elections. As a result, local governments were administered through appointed caretakers rather than elected officials.
According to him, the restoration of peace in the state made it possible to return to democratic governance at the grassroots.
“When peace was fully restored, we reverted to the status quo and conducted local government elections. This is about the third series of LG elections in recent times, and we thank God for the enduring and lasting peace we are enjoying today.”
He commended the Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, a former governor of Borno State, for his eight-year tenure, during which significant efforts were made to restore peace and stability in the state. He noted that the current governor built upon those efforts.
“The former governor did his very best to ensure that Borno witnessed peace, and the current governor took over from where he stopped. The combined efforts of both leaders are what we are experiencing today.”
Senator Lawan specifically praised Governor Professor Babagana Umara Zulum for his wisdom in fully restoring local government elections in the state. He also applauded the State Independent Electoral Commission for conducting the first, second, and now the third rounds of the elections successfully.
He reported massive voter turnout during his visits to polling units across two local governments.
“We went round polling units and witnessed voters coming out en masse to cast their votes. This level of participation shows confidence in governance and leadership in the state.”
He attributed the high voter turnout to good governance provided by the state administration and the All Progressives Congress (APC), noting that without good governance, such participation would not have been possible.
The senator further expressed delight over the peaceful nature of the elections.
“In all the places we visited, there was no rancour. The elections were conducted in a very peaceful atmosphere, and I am highly delighted.”
He advised the incoming local government chairmen to emulate their leaders by upholding integrity, courage, hard work, and resilience, and to prioritize the development of their respective local governments.
Senator Lawan also spoke on the role of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), describing them as products of the security agencies who work closely with the military and other security outfits.“They have justified the confidence reposed in them, and I believe they will continue to deliver on whatever responsibility assigned to them.”
When asked about his ambition to contest the 2027 governorship election, Senator Lawan stated that his immediate focus remains on his responsibilities as a senator.
“I was voted in as a senator, and my priority is to deliver the dividends of democracy to my people first.”
