At a high-profile stakeholders’ engagement held at the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja, to formally unveil the Ajaokuta Economic City and Kogi–Hunan Free Trade Zone, Hon. Aliyu Inda Salami, Chief Economic Adviser to Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, provided key insights into the vision, readiness, and economic potential of the initiative.
The event, attended by government officials, federal agencies, international investors, and diplomatic delegations, marked a major milestone in Kogi State’s industrial transformation strategy. Governor Ododo, federal partners, and foreign investors hailed the unveiling as a turning point for economic growth in the region.
Speaking to journalists, Salami underscored the strategic planning and readiness behind the project, noting that the 4,000-hectare site for the Economic City was chosen for its logistical, infrastructural, and transport advantages. He emphasized that the project has secured full presidential approval and that groundwork for its initial phase is ready to begin.
Salami described the Ajaokuta Economic City as more than a regional development project, but as a catalyst for industrial growth, revenue expansion, and global integration. He explained that the initiative was designed to diversify Kogi’s revenue base, attract large-scale foreign direct investment, and embed the state deeply into global value chains, positioning it as a future industrial powerhouse.
He also highlighted multiple strategic advantages of the Free Trade Zone, including its access to existing power infrastructure, a rail network, inland waterways, and multimodal transport links — features that make it competitive for investors and logistics-oriented industries alike
Salami took the opportunity to commend President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the federal government’s support and timely approval of the project, saying that this political backing reflects confidence in Kogi’s economic vision. He further praised Governor Ododo’s leadership, describing the administration’s commitment as central to realizing the state’s industrial ambitions. His remarks also touched on the broader economic outlook of the Free Trade Zone, noting that it is expected to attract significant investment and create jobs, helping to reduce unemployment and bridge gaps in the state’s development. While exact figures vary in projections, reports suggest expectations of hundreds of millions in annual foreign investment and tens of thousands of jobs once fully operational.
The event drew representatives from China, Turkey, and key Nigerian regulatory agencies, reflecting strong international interest and collaborative support for the project’s success.
