The National Cereals Research Institute (NCRI), Badeggi, Niger State, has showcased its latest agricultural technologies and research breakthroughs at the NIA Expo organized by the Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) in Abuja.
Speaking at the event, the Executive Director of NCRI, Dr. Mohammed N. Ishaq, said the institute’s participation in the expo was aimed at highlighting the critical role of research and innovation in advancing Nigeria’s agricultural sector.
“We are here to showcase the new technologies we’ve developed and to raise awareness about the ongoing research activities at our institute,” Dr. Ishaq stated. “Our work focuses on improving the productivity and resilience of cereal crops such as rice, maize, sorghum, and millet, which are staples in Nigeria.”
He emphasized that the NCRI is committed to supporting farmers through the development of improved crop varieties, sustainable farming practices, and collaborations with stakeholders in both the public and private sectors.
According to him, technology transfer and collaboration with local farmers are key to ensuring food security and reducing Nigeria’s dependence on imported grains.
The Nigeria International Agriculture ( NIA) Expo, which brings together stakeholders from across the agricultural value chain, serves as a platform for innovators, researchers, policymakers, and investors to network and discuss opportunities in agribusiness and food production.
Dr. Ishaq also called on government and private sector actors to increase their support for agricultural research, noting that investments in innovation are vital to achieving national food self-sufficiency and economic growth.
The NCRI booth at the expo featured improved seed varieties, mechanized farming tools, and information on ongoing research projects aimed at addressing challenges such as climate change, pest control, and post-harvest losses.
