The Office of the First Lady, in collaboration with the Edo State Ministry of Health, has launched an Autism Awareness Day to support individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
Mrs. Edesili Okpebholo Anani who spoke during the event said that the Governor, His Excellency Senator Monday Okpebholo, had expressed a heartfelt commitment to increasing funding and policy support for children and adults living with autism.
Speaking further Mrs. Okpebholo urged all stakeholders to prioritize inclusivity and extend their support to those living with autism, emphasizing the discrimination they often encounter in accessing education, healthcare, employment, and social acceptance.
"The Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has pledged to enhance funding and support for diagnostic, therapeutic, and educational services for children and adults on the spectrum. This underscores our government's unwavering commitment to improving health outcomes and fostering social inclusion."
"We must unite in our efforts to build a society where every individual is allowed to thrive," she continued.
In his welcome address, Dr. Cyril Adams Oshiomole, the Commissioner for Health, highlighted that World Autism Awareness Day serves as a global call for compassion, understanding, and action.
He expressed that this celebration allows us to recognize the unique strengths, talents, and perspectives of individuals living with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
Dr. Oshiomole also honored the courage of parents and caregivers, who face daily challenges with love and unwavering dedication.
Mr. Paul Ndukwe and Mrs. Sandra Iyere, parents of autistic children, shared their gratitude for the Edo State Government’s efforts in organizing such impactful events aimed at fostering inclusivity and combating discrimination against individuals with ASD.
They acknowledged the difficulties of caring for their children but expressed how love, patience, and determination have helped them navigate these challenges. Their resolve to ensure their children thrive, despite the obstacles, is both inspiring and a testament to the power of support and community.
The program, organized by the Edo State Ministry of Health in collaboration with the Office of the First Lady, brought together children with autism, teachers, parents, and stakeholders to celebrate the 2025 World Autism Awareness Day.
