THE FCT MINISTER NYESOM WIKE SHOULD COME TO NEGOTIATION TABLE WITH PANDEF
By comrade Silas meabe
PAN Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) was established in 2016 to give a voice to the people of the Niger Delta. Other than the Middle Belt Forum, PANDEF is therefore the latest of such regional bodies behind the likes of Afenifere and ohaneze Ndigbo.we are satisfied that in less than ten years of its existence it has grown to be a strong and strident national voice to be listened to and respected.
At a special General Assembly in portharcourt,Rovers State ,on 24th October,2024, the theme of which was "FOSTERING PEACE AND UNITY FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT OF THE NIGER DELTA REGION ; the forum diiscussed the very unfortunate political lock jam into which Rivers State had been thrown. In a determination to prevent a full-blown crisis from developing. The forum set up a seven person High Level peace and Reconciliation committee Chaired by Obong victor Attah with eminent members including former Military Governor of Kwara State,Col Pam Ogar(rtd); Senators Emmanuel Ibok Essien,Rowland Owie and Stella Omu;Former Bayelsa State Deputy Governor,Rear Admiral G.john jonah(rtd); and Rt Hon Stella Dorgu, all eminent and respected elders of the South-South region with a dlibrerate exclusion of Rivers Stat The exclusion of River State was to ensure that no member would be accused of bias or taking sides.
Three days ago, on Tuesday, 11th March 2p25, an eminent distinguished elders from the region was received in audience by the President, His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.Among the troubling issues facing the region for which they sought the President's intervention was the pontentially explosive political Situation in Rivers State. We need it clear to Mr President that there was a need for him to impress upon the key personalities involved. One of Whom is his cabinet minister, the necessity of prioritizing peace. They were firm in their resovlve that an amicable resolution must be secured.Such a resolution as can only be secured by negotiation, hence our setting up of the peace and Reconciliation committee.
They brought to the attention of Mr President, the difficulties that they were experiencing in trying to secure the cooperation ot his cabinet minister for Federal Capital Territory, Chief Nyesom Wike , since all their attempts in the past to meet with the Hon .Minister had been rebuffed.Mr president did not give us the impression that, in receiving them in audience, he was meeting with representatives of " THE WORST ORGANISATION FOR ANYONE TO RELY ON ^as PANDEF has been decribed in a recent media chat by chief Nyesom Wike. This however seems to have explained his refusal to meet with the peace Reconciliation committee.
Since the President has thrown the ball back in their court, they intend to bring this impasse to his atention in the firm beleive that he can intervene and cause his minister for the FCT, chief Nyesom Wike to come to the negotiation table with PANDEF.it must be realized that it is not possible to clap with one hand and negotiations can only take place if the partiez in dispute agrss to make themselves accessible and available. Should this fail, PANDEF would have no other choice than to disband the peace and Reconciliation committee and withdraw totally from any attempt to resolve this unfortunate lock jam.Our fear, however ,is that this could have catastrophic consequences.
